The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is a massive and expansive international art festival held once every three years in the woodlands of the Echigo-Tsumari region (Tokamachi and Tsunan) since 2000. For 50 days, visitors to the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale traverse 200 villages across roughly 190,000 acres of mountainous terrain located in Niigata, Japan. The entire land is dotted with site-specific artworks created by 160 artists from all over the world, making it the largest, most ambitious art festival in the world. And each piece is united by a single theme: humans are part of nature.

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale began with the aim of creating activities that would continuously open up new prospects for the area, and the artists cooperate with the residents to create works of art with local roots. At this time, many permanent works of art and base facilities remain as assets all over the region.
